Were the G-20 protest in pittsburgh un constitutional?

I had brought up the topic today in law enforcement class when we started talking about what to do about the police when they violate the constitution. And i was wondering were the police in violation of the 1st Amendment when they attacked the protestors? they were peacefully assembled and were not causing any destruction to property. So why did the police act the way that they did?
